Car Detailing FAQs

What is car detailing? Is dealership paint protection any good? We get lots of questions in this industry and sometimes people have heard a lot of “interesting” versions of the truth. We aim to answer your car detailing FAQs honestly, without bias. If your question isn’t answered here, please feel free to contact us for a chat.

What actually is car detailing?

Car (or auto) detailing is the act of performing a thorough cleaning, restoration and finishing of a motor vehicle, to produce a show-quality cleanliness and polish.

I have a new car. How can I best maintain it?

There are a couple of ways you can keep your car in great condition:

1. Washing your car regularly with a high quality wash mitt and shampoo will go a long way.

2. Add some kind of UV protection to your paint on a regular basis.

3. Keeping your wheels clean and removing bugs when you wash your car.

Alternatively, check out our specialised paint protection business, Newcastle Auto Protection, for a ceramic coating – this can really help with long term protection and reduce the maintenance needed to keep your car looking its best!

The local hand car wash is a lot cheaper. Why should I choose Maitland Auto Detailing?

Two reasons:

1. We are a business that delivers a more thorough clean and are not interested in volume over quality. Our pricing structure allows for higher quality products and procedures, plus more time spent on your vehicle.

2. We offer a mobile detailing service so you can have your car professionally detailed at your home or workplace.

How long will it take for you to detail my car?

This depends on the package or service purchased. The bigger the package, the more time allocated to complete the job.

Do you do any type of painting? Bumper scrapes etc?

No, we don’t do spray painting.

Do you sell products for maintaining my car?

Yes, we have a full line of products from reputable brands that are available for purchase. We will take the time to listen to your needs and help you select the most suitable product(s) for your vehicle and lifestyle.

Paint Correction

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is the process of removing microscopic amounts of a vehicle’s paintwork with power tools such as a machine polisher or buffer to remove defects such as swirls, scratches, oxidation and water spotting. Note that it isn’t possible to “correct” peeling paint (paint failure) – this requires a respray through a smash repairer.

How much does paint correction cost?

The cost of paint correction largely depends on the amount of correction work needed (ie how damaged the paint is) and the size of the car. The more steps or time needed, the higher the cost of the job. All of our coating packages come with a preparatory single-step correction included in the price to ensure you get the best result for your money.

On that note – if you are considering having your paint buffed (corrected) don’t shop on price alone. The paint work on your car is worth thousands of dollars; don’t fall for the $150-$200 paint correction specials offered by local car washes. These are not true paint corrections and usually do more damage to your paint, leaving it riddled with buff marks and the scratches you wanted removed in the first place.

Is there a difference between paint correction, paint polishing and buffing?

No, these are terms that are used interchangeable to refer to the same process of correcting defects in automotive paintwork.

Is paint correction safe?

Paint correction by Maitland Auto Detailing is 100% safe. We use the latest technology and have 10 years experience so can ensure a high quality result is achieved. Unfortunately, this can’t be said for every detailing business as there is no certification required to ensure quality results. Cheap correction work normally means poor workmanship from the detailer and possible damage to your paint. The best practice is to pay to have a professional with proven results complete the work rather than trying to save a few dollars and not achieving what you were after. Cheap work can often result in expensive repair with your paint possibly left full of buff marks, burnt or even torn off the edges of panels.

What does paint correction fix?

Paint correction removes imperfections in automotive paintwork. This includes imperfections such as swirls and scratches, paint fading, water spotting or etching. Imperfections can only be removed if the damage hasn’t penetrated through the clear coat (base) layer of the paint work. This type of damage requires a respray by a smash repairer, as does peeling paint.
